Use the Blacksmith forge for metal gear, kitchens for food, woodcrafting stations for furniture, and The Mill for processed ingredients and animal goods.
Pick the correct production system
Blacksmithing
Use the anvil outside the Blacksmith for ingots, tools, weapons, and armor. Core recipes are available from the start, but materials and Blacksmithing levels determine what you can actually make. Crafting in the menu raises the skill and opens perk tiers.
Cooking
Use a kitchen to turn crops, forage, fish, animal products, and pantry goods into food and drinks. Recipes come from shops, quests, mail, shipping certain crops, and other progression. Kitchen quality limits the star levels and recipe levels available.
Woodcrafting
Use Woodcrafting for furniture and functional farm objects. Recipe sets come from progression across skills, shops, mines, collections, and quests. Build storage and utility objects before spending scarce material on a complete decorative set.
Milling
The Mill is a processor east of the Request Board. Complete The Mill Restoration Project to open it. Milling has no separate crafting level in the archived system; it handles animal feed, animal products, milled ingredients, and other conversions.
A reliable crafting workflow
- Choose the result you need: progression gear, food, storage, quest item, or processed ingredient.
- Open the relevant station and check its level, recipe, ingredients, and craft time.
- Reserve materials for current town repairs and tool upgrades before spending them decoratively.
- Keep source chests unlocked when you want the station to draw from storage.
- Schedule time-consuming production before a long trip or overnight transition.
- Store the result by purpose so it is not shipped accidentally.
Blacksmithing priorities
Ingots before impulse upgrades
Mine ore with a named target, then turn it into the ingots required by the next tool, weapon, armor piece, quest, or repair. Do not convert every ore immediately if a quest accepts raw ore or another recipe needs it.
Tools versus combat gear
Choose tools when daily stamina and access are the bottleneck. Choose weapons or armor when mine combat is preventing the next checkpoint. An upgrade is valuable when it removes the specific limit on your current plan.
Infusions and perks
Blacksmithing perks can reduce material cost or craft time and can add bonuses to crafted equipment. Treat an infused result as a bonus unless your current version provides a reliable way to target it; do not spend critical materials assuming a specific random outcome.
Cooking priorities
Match food to the trip
Cook for the activity in front of you. A mine push needs portable recovery; a routine town day may not justify consuming a complex dish. Compare ingredient scarcity, recovery value, and whether the same ingredient is reserved for the museum, a request, or a gift.
Kitchen progression
The archived system distinguishes Beginner, Cozy, and Adept kitchens. Higher kitchens support higher-star and higher-level recipes. The Inn also provides a usable kitchen, and its capability improves through town progression, so check it before buying an upgrade solely for one recipe.
Milling priorities
The Mill converts farm inputs into feed, animal products, and pantry staples used by Cooking. Queue products with a near-term use and account for craft time. A processor is not extra storage: collect finished goods and move them to the correct ingredient or animal-care chest.
Storage layout
- Ore and ingots: beside the path used for Blacksmithing trips.
- Wood, stone, fiber, and decorative materials: close to farm crafting.
- Crops, forage, fish, and animal products: separated into recipe and reserve groups.
- Quest and museum items: isolated from general ingredients.
- Finished food: sorted by routine use versus mine-day recovery.
Common mistakes
Crafting before checking the quest log
A repair or request may need the same ore, crop, or processed ingredient. Reserve active-objective materials first.
Using the wrong station
If a recipe is missing, confirm whether it belongs to Cooking, Blacksmithing, Woodcrafting, or Milling before searching for an unlock.
Buying a kitchen too early
Check recipe level and the Inn’s available kitchen first. The station upgrade only helps if you also have the recipe, ingredients, and skill requirement.
Locking ingredient chests
If a station cannot see stored materials, check the chest’s lock state and move the required item into inventory as a fallback.
