Identify the required water type, season, weather, and shadow size before casting; keep the first new catch for its museum check and sell or cook planned duplicates.
Unlock and equip
Fishing begins once you have access to a fishing pole and usable water. Keep the pole on a consistent toolbar slot and leave room for catches before walking to a distant river, pond, ocean, or mine pool.
Read the water before casting
Location
Start with the broad habitat named by the target: river, pond, ocean, or a specific mine biome. Moving to the correct water removes more wrong possibilities than repeated casting in a convenient but unrelated spot.
Season and weather
Next confirm the current season and any weather requirement. A correct habitat still cannot produce a seasonal fish outside its window. If a catch is weather-limited, use that day for the target instead of a routine fish that remains available more often.
Shadow size
Fish shadows are grouped as small, medium, large, and giant. Skip shadows that cannot match the target unless you also need money, food, or another museum catch.
Catching loop
- Arrive with open bag space and the target filters in mind.
- Scan the water for the correct shadow size.
- Position the cast so the fish can notice it without repeated recasting.
- Complete the bite and reel sequence using the current on-screen prompts.
- Check the catch against the museum and your reserved-item list.
- Continue only while time and inventory still support the return trip.
Schools, bait, traps, and diving
Schools of fish
A school can yield multiple fish before disappearing. The archived mechanics describe two to five catches from a school, making it a high-value stop when its location overlaps your route. Fishing skill perks can improve school-related benefits.
Bait and fish traps
The full fish catalog distinguishes normal pole catches, bait catches, and fish-trap catches. Do not assume a target available through one method also appears through another. Use the acquisition method shown in the current Almanac or Journal.
Diving
Some aquatic items are collected by diving rather than with the pole. If repeated correct casts never match the item’s category, confirm that it is not a diveable catch.
Museum and inventory strategy
Reserve one new fish until you verify its museum set. After that, separate catches into four uses: donation, quest or gift, cooking ingredient, and sale. This prevents a rare seasonal catch from being shipped immediately and then needed for a collection.
Mine fishing
Mine biomes use the same filtering mindset but add travel and combat cost. Pack food, reach the correct elevator checkpoint, and leave extra bag slots. A mine-fishing trip fails early when routine ore and monster drops fill every slot before you reach the pool.
Legendary and rare targets
Treat rare and legendary hunts as checklist projects, not casual casts. Confirm current season, weather, location, shadow, required method, and any skill or progression condition in-game before committing a full day. Older Early Access lists may omit full-release additions or use earlier unlock boundaries.
Common mistakes
- Fishing the right season in the wrong habitat: confirm water type first.
- Ignoring shadow size: pass incompatible shadows when targeting one entry.
- Carrying a nearly full bag: store tools and materials that do not belong on the trip.
- Selling the first rare catch: check museum, quest, gift, and recipe uses.
- Assuming every aquatic item uses a pole: review bait, trap, and diving categories.
Common questions
Quick FAQ
What determines which fish can appear?
Fish entries are differentiated by location, season, weather, rarity, and shadow size, so use all of those filters when targeting one catch.
Should I donate or sell a new fish first?
Reserve the first unfamiliar catch until you check its museum set, recipe, gift, and quest uses; then decide how to use duplicates.
Can fish appear inside the mines?
Yes. Mine biomes have their own fish pools, including catches associated with areas such as the Tide Caverns and Lava Caves.
